FOR YOUR INFORMATION.........

A few laws went into effect in September 2009 that directly affect us:  (1) all motorcyclists under the age of 18 must now wear a helmet; (2) "Failure to Maintain Control of a Motor Vehicle" law pertains to unsafe driving resulting from ANYTHING a driver may be doing behind the wheel that does not have anything to do with the sole purpose of operating the vehicle.  This includes, but is not limited to, texting, talking on the phone, adjusting the radio, eating or drinking, dogs on a person's lap, etc., etc.  A police officer might not stop a person for simply talking on the phone (or whatever)...but, if for example, that person is weaving in traffic, or causes an accident while doing it, they can be charged.

OK...it's getting a bit chilly for riding!  Some of us have begun putting our bikes up for the season.  Don't forget to winterize them by adding either Stabil or K-100 to the fuel tanks.  Once you do, start the bike, and let the fuel run through the carbs and injectors for a minute.  Store your bike with a full tank of gas.

IN HONOR TO OUR SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN:

Piscataquis County decided that we would pay for any of our county's membership renewal if it comes due while that member is on active duty orders with the U.S. Military.  We will have one such member in the near future.  This is a small token of our commitment to our troops, and to say thank you for serving.  We would like to encourage other counties to consider following suit to honor your people in this manner as well.

THOUGHTS AND WELL WISHES:

  • One of our members, Kendall Noke, is preparing for deployment with the Maine Army National Guard.  Our thoughts and prayers will go with him for a safe tour of duty and safe return after he leaves.  Thank you for your service, Kendall!  As a small token of our gratutude, the officers of the county voted to pay for your UBM membership when it comes due after you are deployed.

We were thrilled with the amount of toys that we brought back with us from the UBM toy run in September.  We filled the back room at the Covered Bridge Restraunt, and separated them into piles...one each for the Milo and Dover-Foxcroft area Kiwanis.  We also donated two (each) large bags of stuffed animals to C.A. Dean Hospital (Greenville) and Mayo Hospital (Dover-Foxcroft).  All the toys and animals have been delivered.  Wish we could be there on Christmas Day to see the faces of the excited children, thanks to the total effort of the UBM across the state.

Here's what a member was recently overheard saying:

Riding your motorcycle when it's too cold out can be dangerous.  If you choose to, please dress appropriately and watch out for hypothermia!
